enhanced neuropathic pain following intraspinaly injection of schwann cells in contusion model of spinal cord injury     pourheydar b [1] *, joghataei mt [2] , najafzadeh n [3]     received: 6 nov , 2011 accepted: 20 jan , 2012     abstract   background & aims : spinal cord injury (sci) leads to sensorimotor deficits and neuropathic pain (np). cell therapy is a common method for treatment of sci. the mechanism which has been explained for development of np including: transplantation of stem cell leads to differentiation of these cells to astrocytes, and these cells secretes ngf which leads to axonal sprouting in dorsal horn neurons and this leads to np. since schwann cells (scs) are commonly used in cell therapy, we sought to investigate whether intraspinaly injection of these cells develop np.   materials & methods : 24 male wistar rats were used. scs were cultured, model of sci was performed and rats were divided into the three groups including: a control group, an experiment group and a sham group. in control group only a laminectomy was performed, the experiment group received scs intraspinaly. the sham group received serum in the same way. locomotion was assessed using bbb test and np was assessed by withdrawal threshold test.   result : significant improvement was observed in the bbb scores in experiment group (p<0.05) compared to sham and control group and there was a significant difference in withdrawal threshold means between sham and experiment groups (p< 0.05).   conclusion: the present study shows that intraspinaly transplantation of scs can improve locomotor recovery and lead to np, so it is required for development of methods for attenuation of np in cell therapy studies in future.   keywords: schwann cell, spinal cord injury, neuropathic pain     address: anatomy department, faculty of medicine, urmia university of medical sciences, urmia , iran. tel : (+98) 9144462165 email: [email protected]   [1] department of anatomy, faculty of medicine, urmia university of medical sciences, urmia, iran (corresponding author)  [2] department of anatomy, faculty of medicine, tehran university of medical sciences, tehran, iran   [3] department of anatomy, faculty of medicine, ardabil university of medical sciences, ardabil, iran

Central Neuropathic Pain After Graft of Bone Marrow Stromal Cells in the Spinal Cord Contusion of Rat

Purpose: The purpose of this study was the investigation of thermal and mechanical Allodynia after BMSCs grafting in the Spinal Cord Contusion of rat Materials and Methods: In this study used 40 female Sprague- Dawley 6-8 week old that 33 rats received vertebral laminectomy to expose spinal cord (L1 vertebral level). The cord was then contused with the weight drop device. Experimental groups c...

Referred sensations and neuropathic pain following spinal cord injury.

It has been proposed that painful and non-painful referred sensations (RSs) are associated with reorganization of sensory pathways in patients with complete spinal cord injury (SCI). In order to investigate the referred sensation (RS) phenomenon and its correlation with neuropathic pain (NP) 48 patients with complete SCI, 24 with chronic NP and 24 without pain or paraesthesias were studied usin...

Neuropathic pain in spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND Several studies have described pain prevalence, risk factors, pain and medical variables in spinal cord injury (SCI) populations. In this study on traumatic SCI in Turkey, we surveyed the neuropathic pain experiences during in-patient rehabilitation and defined the relationships between neuropathic pain and demographic and SCI characteristics of patients. OBJECTIVES To survey the n...

Spinal cord injury: a model of central neuropathic pain.

The condition of pain after spinal cord injury (SCI) affects the life quality of nearly 70% of individuals with SCI. Clinical studies over the past decade have provided important insights into the complexities of the clinical and psychosocial characteristics of this debilitating consequence of SCI. The use of experimental models developed to study at-level or below-level pain has provided an ap...

Effect of coenzyme Q10 on neuropathic pain threshold resulting from spinal cord injury in male rats

Introduction: Coenzyme Q10 is a powerful antioxidant that has the ability to reduce the damage caused by oxidative stress and is predominantly found in the inner mitochondrial membrane. This study was conducted to determine the effect of coenzyme Q10 on neuropathic pain in an animal model of spinal cord injury. Methods: In order to induce neuropathic pain, thoracic segments of the spinal cor...
